Starbase Becomes an Official City in Texas
The area where Elon Musk’s company SpaceX has its rockets and launch site is now officially a city. It will be called Starbase.
People living near the SpaceX site in Cameron County, Texas, voted to make it a city. The result was clear: 212 people voted yes, and only 6 voted no. The new city will cover around 1.45 square miles and include SpaceX buildings, staff housing, and plans for new things like a science school and entertainment area.
A man named Robert “Bobby” Peden, who works with SpaceX, was elected as the first mayor of Starbase. Two other people linked to SpaceX also won roles as city commissioners.
Some people are happy and believe this will bring new development and opportunities. But others are worried. Environmental groups and locals say it could limit public access to beaches and give too much power to a private company.
The city’s status will be officially confirmed on May 20 by the local government of Cameron County. After that, Starbase will fully begin operating as a new city in Texas.
