X Blocks 8,000+ Accounts in India After Government Order
The social media platform X (formerly Twitter) has started blocking more than 8,000 accounts in India after getting orders from the Indian government. The government warned that if X did not follow the order, the company could face big fines, and its staff in India could even go to jail.
Some of the accounts being blocked belong to international news organizations and well-known people. In many cases, the government did not say which posts were breaking the law. For many accounts, no reason or proof was given at all.
To follow the order, X is making these accounts invisible in India, but they will still be visible in other countries. X says it doesn’t agree with this order. The company believes blocking full accounts is not needed and is unfair. They say it stops people from speaking freely, which is a basic right.
X also said it wants to be open and honest about what is happening. However, because of legal rules, the company cannot share the actual orders from the government.
X is now looking into legal ways to fight this. But under Indian law, the company has fewer rights to challenge such orders compared to Indian citizens. That’s why X is encouraging anyone affected by the block to go to court and take legal action if they want to.
