Himanta Biswa Sarma Says Pakistan’s Claims on Brahmaputra River Are False
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has strongly responded to Pakistan’s recent comments about the Brahmaputra River. Pakistan had claimed that China could stop the river’s flow into India, which could hurt India’s water supply. But Sarma said this claim is not true and is only meant to create fear.
He explained that most of the water in the Brahmaputra River comes from inside India, mainly due to rain in Assam and nearby areas. Only about 30 to 35% of the river’s water comes from China, from glaciers and rainfall in Tibet. So even if China were to stop or reduce the flow, India would still have enough water.
Sarma also said that if China ever did reduce the water, it might actually help Assam during the rainy season, because the state often suffers from floods due to too much water.
He accused Pakistan of trying to distract people by spreading false stories. He made it clear that India knows how to manage its water properly and there is no need to worry about such claims.
The Chief Minister’s reply was meant to calm people’s fears and show that India is prepared and confident when it comes to handling its rivers and natural resources.
