Tensions Rise in LA Immigration Protests, Trump Warns of Consequences

U.S. President Donald Trump has warned protesters in Los Angeles that there will be serious consequences if they spit on police officers or soldiers. His warning came after immigration protests turned violent in parts of the city.

The protests began after ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) carried out immigration raids. Many people came out to protest against these actions, marching from Mariachi Plaza to a federal immigration center. Protesters shouted slogans like “ICE out of LA” and demanded an end to the raids.

As the protests grew, the situation turned tense. According to reports, National Guard troops used tear gas and pepper balls to control the crowd—without giving a warning. Videos from the scene showed thick clouds of smoke and people running for cover.

President Trump, speaking from New Jersey, strongly defended the decision to send 2,000 National Guard troops to the city. He said some protesters were spitting on officers and soldiers, which he called unacceptable. He said clearly: “They spit, we hit.” He added that no one will be allowed to disrespect the police or military.

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) confirmed that 27 people were arrested for not leaving when ordered to. Police haven’t said whether they used non-lethal weapons during the operation.

Meanwhile, Vice President JD Vance and White House advisor Stephen Miller called the protests a form of insurrection (a violent uprising). Although Trump has not yet used the Insurrection Act—a law that allows the president to send military forces to control unrest—he said it depends on how bad the situation becomes.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said that the Marines at Camp Pendleton are on high alert and could be sent in if violence continues.

Right now, the situation in Los Angeles remains tense, and the government is watching closely. More protests could happen in the coming days, and both sides are preparing for what might come next.
