In response to rising tensions with Pakistan, India has temporarily closed down 32 airports in northern and western parts of the country. The shutdown will remain in effect until 5:29 AM on May 15, 2025.
The decision follows a recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, on April 22, which killed 26 civilians. India has launched “Operation Sindoor” to respond to the incident and to strengthen national security.
Affected Major Airports
Some of the major airports that are closed include:
- Srinagar
- Amritsar
- Jammu
- Chandigarh
- Jaisalmer
- Bikaner
- Bhuj
- Jodhpur
- Hindon
- Bathinda
- Jamnagar
- Ambala
- Halwara
- Gaggal (Kangra)
- Kishangarh
- Kandla
- Awantipur
- Adampur
- Keshod
These airports are either close to the border or considered sensitive military zones.
Impact on Travelers
Airlines like IndiGo, Air India, and SpiceJet have cancelled or rerouted many flights. Passengers flying from or to northern states are being told to check with airlines and reach airports early, as tighter security checks and delays are expected.
Security forces have increased patrols around the affected airports. Visitors are not being allowed inside terminals, and luggage is being screened twice.
International Consequences
The growing India-Pakistan conflict has also affected international air routes. Several global airlines have changed flight paths to avoid Indian and Pakistani airspace. Events such as the Indian Premier League (IPL) have been postponed due to safety concerns.
Advisory
The Indian Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) are expected to issue regular updates. Travelers should stay tuned to official announcements, avoid rumors, and plan trips accordingly.
