COVID-19 Cases in India Rise Sharply, Over 6,000 Now Active – Kerala Reports Highest Numbers

India is once again seeing a rise in COVID-19 cases, with active infections crossing the 6,000 mark as of June 8, 2025. Health officials have confirmed that 6,133 people are currently infected, and the numbers have increased rapidly over the past two weeks.

Kerala Reports the Most Cases

Among all the states, Kerala has reported the highest number of active cases, with nearly 1,950 people currently being treated for the virus. Other states showing noticeable increases include:

  • Gujarat – 822 active cases
  • West Bengal – 693 cases
  • Delhi – 686 cases

These states are now keeping a close watch on hospital resources and are conducting emergency drills to stay prepared.

What’s Happening?

On May 22, India had just 257 active cases. In just two weeks, the number has shot up more than 20 times. In the last 24 hours alone, 378 new cases were recorded, and six deaths were reported—three of them from Kerala. Since January 2025, the total number of COVID-related deaths has reached 65.

Government Actions

To prevent further spread and prepare for emergencies, many states have:

  • Conducted mock drills at hospitals
  • Checked oxygen supplies, ICU beds, and ventilators
  • Increased testing and tracking efforts

Officials are urging people not to panic but to be careful, especially those with health problems or weak immunity. Most of the current infections are mild, but the quick rise in numbers is a reminder to remain alert.

Key Points to Know

  • Active cases in India: 6,133
  • New cases (in 24 hrs): 378
  • Total deaths in 2025 so far: 65
  • Most affected state: Kerala
  • Main concern: Rapid rise in cases in a short period

While there’s no full lockdown or major restrictions right now, experts say it’s important to follow basic precautions like good hygiene, wearing masks in crowded areas, and avoiding unnecessary travel if feeling unwell.

India’s health system is on alert, and officials continue to monitor the situation closely.
