Infosys Lets Go of 240 Trainees After Failed Assessments Amid Hiring Woes.

In a fresh wave of workforce reductions, IT major Infosys has dismissed 240 trainees who failed to clear internal assessment tests—an essential benchmark for moving into active project roles. This action comes on the heels of a similar round of exits earlier this year, indicating growing pressure on fresh talent as India’s tech industry grapples with an economic slowdown.

Many of the affected trainees had already faced long delays in onboarding—some waiting for over two years to officially join the company. The global macroeconomic downturn and shrinking client budgets have made onboarding timelines uncertain, forcing firms to make tough decisions on bench strength and hiring.

While Infosys maintains that the assessment process is a long-established and transparent method to evaluate job readiness, the dismissals have triggered frustration among fresh graduates, especially those who waited months—if not years—for their chance to start working.

In its defense, the company highlighted that upskilling resources and outplacement assistance have been offered to the impacted individuals, along with severance packages to help cushion the transition. However, concerns remain among the next batch of trainees, whose assessment results are expected to be announced in the coming week.

As hiring slows and the competition tightens, freshers are beginning to feel the heat in what used to be considered a guaranteed first step into India’s booming IT industry. For many, clearing internal assessments has now become as critical as cracking campus placements.
