Jagmeet Singh Loses Election and Steps Down as NDP Leader in Canada

In Canada’s 2025 federal election, Jagmeet Singh, the leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP), lost his seat and later resigned from his position as party leader. This is a major moment in Canadian politics.

NDP’s Worst Election Result

The NDP performed very poorly in the election. The party won only 7 seats, which is its worst result ever. Because of this, the party lost its official status in the Canadian Parliament.

Why Did Voters Turn Away from Jagmeet Singh?

Many political experts say that Jagmeet Singh’s support for the Khalistan movement (a Sikh separatist idea) may have upset some Canadian voters. People were also unhappy with some of his views on India-Canada relations. These issues may have made voters feel that he was not focusing enough on Canada’s national unity and foreign policy.

Liberal Party Wins the Election

While the NDP lost badly, the Liberal Party led by Mark Carney did well. They won 168 seats and will form a minority government. Many voters liked Carney’s message of stability and strong leadership, especially during uncertain times.

End of an Era for Jagmeet Singh

Jagmeet Singh made history by being the first person of color to lead a major political party in Canada. His resignation brings an end to his time as NDP leader. Now, the party will begin looking for a new leader to help them recover and prepare for the future.
