The city of Los Angeles has announced a night-time curfew after protests over immigration raids turned violent. The curfew will be in place from 8 PM to 6 AM in parts of downtown. This decision was made after several protests led to looting, fires, and damage to businesses.
People started protesting after federal immigration officers (ICE) carried out raids and arrested many undocumented immigrants. What began as peaceful protests later became chaotic, with groups of people breaking windows, stealing from shops, and blocking roads.
In response, former President Donald Trump sent thousands of National Guard soldiers and Marines to help with the situation. However, California’s Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass did not agree with this move. They said it was wrong for the federal government to send military forces without permission from the state.
Even with military troops in the city, local police are the ones handling most of the unrest. Police have used tear gas and rubber bullets to control the crowds, which has led to injuries to both protesters and officers. Some journalists were also hurt while covering the protests.
So far, around 200 people have been arrested for staying out during curfew or being involved in violent acts. More than 20 businesses have been damaged, and several fires were reported.
Mayor Bass said the curfew is important to stop further violence and protect the city. The curfew does not apply to emergency workers, people without homes, or news reporters.
Meanwhile, the state of California has taken legal action to stop the use of military forces in the city. A court hearing will take place soon to decide what happens next.
Protests over immigration have also spread to other cities like New York, Chicago, and Dallas, but they have been smaller and mostly peaceful.
This situation shows the ongoing disagreements between the federal and state governments about immigration and the use of force. For now, Los Angeles remains tense, and authorities hope the curfew will help bring things under control.
