Pakistan Asks India to Restart Indus Waters Treaty After Suspension

Pakistan has sent a new letter to India, asking it to restart the Indus Waters Treaty, which was stopped by India in April 2025. This is the fourth time Pakistan has made this request. The treaty is an agreement between India and Pakistan to share river water. It was signed in 1960 with help from the World Bank. The water from rivers like the Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab is very important for Pakistan’s farming, drinking water, and electricity.

India stopped the treaty after a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, where 26 civilians were killed. India said the attackers came from Pakistan and that Pakistan must take strong action against terrorism before the treaty can start again. Since the suspension, Pakistan says it is facing serious water problems and wants to solve the issue peacefully through talks.

Pakistan believes that water should not be linked to political or security issues. It says the treaty worked even during wars and should not be stopped now. India, however, says that peace and safety must come first. The World Bank, which helped create the treaty, has not taken any action and says it only supports cooperation.

This is the first time the treaty has been stopped in over 60 years. Many experts are worried that this could cause more problems between the two countries. They say it is important for India and Pakistan to talk and find a peaceful solution, because water is essential for life and should be protected from conflict.
