Tensions Rise in Gilgit-Baltistan as Pakistan Cracks Down on Anti-China Mining Protests

In Gilgit-Baltistan, people are angry over a new law that allows Chinese companies to do mining in their region. After the law was passed, many locals and political activists started protesting, saying the decision was made without asking or informing the people.

The protesters fear that the mining will damage the environment, affect local lands, and give no real benefit to the local people. They say this will mostly help Chinese companies, not the people of Gilgit-Baltistan.

In response to the protests, the Pakistani government started a strict crackdown. Police arrested many activists, stopped the protests, and even cut off internet access in some areas to stop people from organizing more protests.

The area is important because it is part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). But people in Gilgit-Baltistan feel they are being left out while foreign companies take their resources.

So far, the government has not clearly explained why it took such tough action. But human rights groups are raising concerns and asking the government to listen to the people instead of using force.

Locals are still demanding that the mining deal be stopped or changed, and they want a say in what happens to their land and future. The situation remains tense, and more protests could happen if talks are not held soon.
