Nicholas Pooran Ends His International Career at 29, Surprises Everyone
West Indies cricketer Nicholas Pooran has shocked fans by announcing his retirement from international cricket at the young age of 29. Pooran shared the news on social media and said it was a tough but personal decision.
Pooran was one of West Indies’ most exciting players in T20 and ODI matches. He played 106 T20Is and scored over 2,200 runs, hitting many sixes and earning a strong fan following. He also served as the captain of the white-ball team for some time. His last international game was a T20 match against Bangladesh in December 2024, and he played his last ODI against Sri Lanka in July 2023.
In his message, Pooran said it was a great honour to represent the West Indies and he will always be proud of wearing the maroon jersey. He also thanked his family, teammates, and fans for their support.
Even though he is leaving international cricket, Pooran will continue to play in T20 leagues around the world, including the IPL. Many cricketers today are choosing to focus on league cricket, where the schedule is shorter and the pay is better.
West Indies coach Darren Sammy said that more players might retire early like Pooran because of the pressure of playing all formats. He added that it’s becoming harder to keep players motivated for international cricket.
Fans are sad to see Pooran leave the West Indies team so early, but they are glad they will still get to watch him in T20 leagues. His powerful batting and energy on the field will be missed in international cricket.
